New Labor Laws Will Affect Seafood Industry
Changes to labor laws are putting the pinch on some in the seafood industry this year.
Many seafood processors, even restaurants rely on “guest workers,” who have been traditionally paid just over the minimum wage of $7.25. In the past, the rate for guest workers in Acadiana was found using an average of a survey by the LSU Ag Center of what U.S. citizens are paid to do the same job the guest workers will do.
But as Valeri Poinseti reports, that rate’s now changing and it’s going up.
