The theme of this’s year gala is “Hat’s Off to MEC” in honor of the school’s 35th year in central Louisiana.

“We’re very proud that we have been able to provide extraordinary educational opportunities to students in central Louisiana aged 21 months to 6th grade for more than 30 years,” said Joelle Flaherty, Head of School. “The goal of MEC is to help each child reach his or her full potential in all areas of life. This authentic Montessori environment supports cognitive development as well as social skills, emotional growth, physical coordination, and global awareness.” The Annual Barry Gala was created six years ago to honor the school’s founders, Dorothy and Donald Barry, and to help fund future growth. Dorothy and Donald Barry first introduced the Montessori concept to central Louisiana in 1978. Since then, the school has grown and continues to grow. In the fall of 1996, the school moved to its present location at 4209 North Bolton Avenue in Alexandria. Through strong parent desire and support, MEC opened its Toddler Program in January 2011 for children aged 21-36 months. In keeping with the Barry’s original vision of the school, the Breithupt Wing was designed and built as a toddler Montessori environment. The Toddler Program has been incredibly successful and has had student waiting lists since its inception. In 2014, the school plans to open a new middle school for 7th and 8th grade students.
