Junior Lifeguard Course at NSU

Northwestern_State_University_of_LouisianaNorthwestern State University will offer a Junior Lifeguard course at the NSU Recreation Complex pool.  The class is designed to guide youth toward the American Red Cross Lifeguard course by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards.  Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills.  They will learn techniques and build stamina during this program.  The Junior Lifeguarding course does not certify participants in first aid, CPR or AED or as a lifeguard.

Junior Lifeguarding is designed for youths 11 years of age, or those who have completed the 5th grade through 14 years of age.  Older participants are also encouraged to participate if they feel the need for pre-training for Lifeguard course.

Skills that participants must have to participate include swimming the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side; swimming the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence; treading water for one minute using arms and leg; showing a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl, and submerging and swimming a distance of 10 feet under water.

The course will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday through Friday July 16-27. The cost of the course is 0.
