Jabberwock 2013

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc., Alexandria (LA) Alumnae Chapter will celebrate Jabberwock 2013 with the presentation of the award winning play, “The Dance on Widow’s Row”, on Saturday, June 15, at 7:00 p.m.  In an interpretation of the immortal classic “Alice in Wonderland,” Lewis Carroll created the delightful character known as “Jabberwock” who summoned all of the creatures in the kingdom to perform a gala event. Being mindful of this concept, Delta member Marian G. Conover Hope of Iota Chapter (Boston, Massachusetts) creatively recalled this mystical character, but in a dramatically different manner, when faced with the challenge of devising plans for a fundraising project. Conceptualized in 1925 as a musical variety show that consisted of skits and dances, the Jabberwock has since evolved into a more diverse program that continues to raise funds for scholarships and other Delta sponsored public service projects.

UpStage Theatre Company of Baton Rouge, is proud to present “The Dance on Widow’s Row”, written by the award-winning playwright Samm-Art Williams.  The play depicts four wealthy widows in the fictional city of Port Town, NC who invite the area’s four most eligible bachelors to an intimate soiree for eight. Having already buried nine husbands altogether, the ladies know that neighbors’ tongues will wag about their gathering; but they are willing to endure vicious gossip if there is a chance that they will meet “Mr. Right” during the evening. “The Dance on Widow’s Row” is a light comedy about death, dating and superstition – – or, more specifically, about how hard it can be for a woman to get a date after she’s buried a few husbands.
