Historian Tells Rotary: First Bowie Knife Made in Central LA

Here’s a fact you may not know about Central Louisiana. Historians tell us the first Bowie knife ever forged was made on the banks of Bayou Boeuf in the Bunkie area.

Today, members of the Rotary Club there heard the story about their link to history.

The knife became famous for being used by Bowie at the Sandbar Fight in 1827 in the Mississippi River across from Natchez.

He was almost killed. He was stabbed, shot and beaten, but he prevailed he said because of his large knife.

Colonel Jim Bowie, of course, was one of the heroes at the Alamo, where he died in 1836.
