Grant Parish Sheriff Cleans Up Evidence Back Log

DestroyedEvidenceSince Sheriff Steven McCain took office on July 1, 2012, the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office has been working tirelessly to clean up a backlog of old evidence, some dating back as far as 1978.

“When I first took office, I became aware that the Sheriff’s Office evidence room had not been purged in quite some time.  I immediately made it a top priority to clean it up.  With the assistance of the Department of Justice, which has a team that specializes in organizing and purging old evidence back logs, we have worked non-stop to clear out the back log of old evidence,” stated Sheriff Steven McCain.

With the help of District Attorney Jay Lemoine, an Order was recently signed by Judge Willett authorizing the destruction of the old evidence, which included illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia and other illegal contraband seized over the years.  In carrying out the destruction order and with the assistance of the Grant Parish Police Jury, deputies destroyed the contraband, which had an estimated value of over $500,000.
