NATCHITOCHES – The Thurman D. Miller Youth Foundation presents the Fourth Annual Family Day and Trail Ride Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Turner’s Place in Bermuda. The proceeds from the event will help sponsor youth attending the Youth Leadership Development Camp in St. Landry June 24 – 28, 2013.
The Family Day and Trail Ride will take place at Turner’s Place in Bermuda, Louisiana. Gates open at 11:00 a.m. and the ride starts at 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5, and children under age 7 get in free. The event will feature a live performance by Lil Wayne And Same Old Two Step, and music by DJ Rob Real of Shreveport. Donations will be accepted at the gate to benefit those attending the Youth Leadership Development Camp.
The Youth Leadership Development Camp, based out of Camp Chicota in St. Landry, was organized in 2001 by the Central State Troopers Coalition of Louisiana. “The camp’s mission is to instill discipline, values, etiquette, moral motivation, time management, team building and most of all respect in each and every camper,” stated LSP Sgt. Thurman D. Miller.
The Youth Leadership Development Camp features courses that teach effective communication skills, good grooming practices such as how to tie a tie, and etiquette skills like social and table manners. The camp also features numerous sports and outdoor activities including swimming, baseball, volleyball, hiking, leadership horseback riding and group fishing trips. “The goal of the camp is to create an experience that will equip youth with the skills to become happy, healthy and successful contributing members of their community,” stated Robert F. Guilbeaux, Youth Leadership Development Camp Director.
Each year up to 50 youth, ages 11 – 13, attend the week-long camp free of charge through donations and sponsorships. The average cost for a child to attend the camp is $125. Sgt. Miller hopes to have 35 – 40 youth from Natchitoches and the surrounding parishes attend the camp this year.
