***UPDATE***  An arrest is made in the case of a Rapides jail inmate who walked off the job and then apparently instigated a murder suicide in Grant Parish.

Rapides deputies arrested Antonio Calhoun of Alexandria as accessory after the fact to escape. Deputies say he helped McKennedy Armstead escape from the Alexandria utility plant, where he was a trusty. Armstead then went to a home off River Road in Grant Parish and killed Jhonnie Kite, before turning the gun on himself.

Calhoun is in jail under a half million-dollar bond.

The Grant Parish Sheriff confirms the escapee from Rapides who was found dead there Monday is part of a murder-suicide.

McKennedy Armstead of Alexandria was found dead in a home on Old River Road in Grant Parish along with Johonnie Kite. The two are not related.

Armstead was a trustee working at the Alexandria City Utility Plant when he reportedly walked off, stole a city truck, and later abandoned it.

That happened Monday morning and by the afternoon, Grant authorities reported the discovery of the two bodies in their parish.

Alexandria Chief, Loren Lampert says, “The APD is investigating all aspects of this incident, which occurred within our jurisdiction in conjunction with the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.”

Alexandria Chief Loren Lampert confirms an investigation is underway, but he says at this time it does appear the deaths are caused by one person.

Armstead was serving time for a drug conviction and was soon to be released.
