DOTD: Vernon Lake to be Partially Drawn Down to Assess Damage

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces that Vernon Lake will be partially drawn down in order to fully evaluate the condition of the dam after the rainfall associated with Hurricane Harvey caused some minor damage. The dam is stable at the current time. The lake level is near pool stage and the management gate is currently open. The management gate will continue be left open to facilitate the draw down.

In order to adequately assess the complete extent of the damage to the dam, the lake will need to be drawn down significantly below pool stage. The extent and duration of the draw down are not known at this time. Additional information will be provided in future notices as it becomes available.

Anacoco Lake which is located downstream of Vernon Lake is near pool stage. It is the intent to maintain Anacoco Lake near pool stage while Vernon Lake is being drawn down.
