Few weeds bother area conservationists like the giant salvinia. They can literally choke the life out of a waterway.
For that reason, officials with the Red River Waterway Commission are always looking for ways to kill the plant without harming other vegetation and in an economical manner. And, thanks to researchers at Stephen F. Austin State University, many believe there is a better way to get rid of this weed.
The demonstration was held today at the Aquatic Research Center in the Lena community. It’s run by the Red River Waterway Commission, which is dedicated to keeping salvinia out of the river and waterways that feed into it.
