The family of Solomon Northup, the main character in the award-winning movie “12 Years a Slave”, is in Central Louisiana. They gathered yesterday morning at the Epps House on the campus of LSU of Alexandria.
The home is one of the original buildings from the plantation owner Edwin Epps and is now a museum about Northup as well as Sue Eakin, who brought Northup’s story to a wide audience.
The event was sponsored by Frank Eakin.
Doctor Sue Eakin died in 2009, but she read Northup’s biography when she was a child.
Some 75 descendants of Northup joined the group, including some of the actors from 12 years a slave. They followed the Northup Trail established by Doctor Eakin, which describes Northup’s experiences in Central Louisiana.
