Sicilian Descendents Host Heritage Festival

heritagefestDescendants of Sicily make up a good portion of Louisiana and they have their own heritage festival in Independence.

It’s the seventh year for this heritage festival. The entertainment includes authentic Italian flag throwers from Tuscany, a spaghetti-eating contest, and a lot of traditional games.

Independence bills itself as the little Italy of Louisiana and was created because of the New Orleans to Jackson route of the great northern railroad in the 1880’s. The area has a thriving strawberry industry and they’re available this time of year.
