Press Release – On October 10, around 8:30 am, APD officers responded to a house in the 3300 block of Evergreen Drive to a report of a disturbance and a gun being fired. Officers arrived and found a male subject in front of the house. While the subject was being detained, he was found to be in possession of a bag of suspected marijuana. A bullet casing was found near the male, at the edge of the carport, as was collected as evidence.
One officer on scene observed a dog in the back yard that was extremely malnourished. The dog had no water or food and apparently had not eaten in some time. While checking on the animal, officers found a phone in the back yard that was then identified as belonging to the male subject. Officers then discovered a handgun in an empty bag of dog food that was in the yard. The gun was found to be stolen out of Colfax.
Continuing the investigation, officers learned that a female subject had been at the house when the shot was fired, however she had left prior to the officers’ arrival. She was located shortly thereafter, and officers learned that the male subject had become angry and threatened her with the gun before firing a shot in the air. The subject then attempted to strike the female with the gun while she was inside her car, and accidentally dropped the magazine from the gun into the car. Officers retrieved the magazine as evidence.
The male subject was identified as Akeem Cannon, 26, of Alexandria. He was charged with Possession of Marijuana, Discharging a Firearm, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Cruelty to Animals, and Domestic Abuse Aggravated Assault. He was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center.
