NSU officials say a critical audit of the athletic department issued last week is a misunderstanding. They say there is no deficit as the audit implies. Rather, school officials say they have paid off a scoreboard debt early, saving some 3 thousand dollars.

The athletic department at Northwestern is among several cited by the State Legislative auditors for problems. The problem is a deficit of some $104,000 caused by what appears to be poor bookkeeping. NSU is one of 9 athletic departments listed by auditors as having similar problems.
