New bill could ban cell phones in the hands of Louisiana drivers

House bill 229 was approved on Monday by the House Transportation Committee. That bill would ban drivers from holding cell phones in their hands while behind the wheel.

The current state law prohibits texting and driving. And this bill would be an expansion of the existing law.

Legislators in 18 other states already have similar laws in place.

The bill is set to head to the house floor for debate.
