Guardsman in Helicopter Crash Attended Pineville High

helicopterThe bodies of all but two servicemen have been recovered after an army helicopter crashed off the Florida panhandle.

Pilot David Strother of Pineville was among the 11 victims. He was a guardsman based out of Hammond and was one of two pilots on the helicopter. Strother had served oversea tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

He was a 1989 alum of Pineville High School. His son went there too. The principal remembers the family and says this is a time of mourning.

Three other Louisiana guardsmen died. The black hawk they were in went down in heavy fog Tuesday night during a training exercise. A salvage barge has been contracted to complete the recovery of the aircraft.

The crash is currently under investigation by both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Shreveport and Caddo parish authorities are remembering the crash victims. Caddo Parish Commissioner Ken Epperson and others gathered at Government Plaza this morning to hold a moment of silence for the people lost in the crash.
