A Georgia man is arrested as a fugitive in Rapides Parish and another man is charged with trying to help him escape.

Authorities say 27-year-old Dayton Paul Whatley is awaiting extradition back to Georgia. Rapides deputies say 37-year-old Byron Willis is charged with obstruction because he tried helping Whatley escape.

Authorities confirm Whatley is wanted in Georgia for burglary and transaction card fraud. They say he has been living in Forest Hill.

Detectives at the Glenmora Sub-station were tasked with locating Whatley as they were familiar with him from a February arrest in the Glenmora area for three counts of Simple Burglary and one count of Unauthorized Use of a Moveable.

“When Georgia authorities contacted me, we were already familiar with this suspect and immediately went to work in attempting to locate him” said Sheriff William Earl Hilton.  “Fortunately, Allen Parish investigators and our investigators often work together, and we were able to get this fugitive in custody quickly and without anyone getting injured.  I would also like to thank the McNary Police Department for their assistance in this capture.”
