NSU Jazz Orchestra

Free and Open to the Public

NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State University Jazz Orchestra will honor the late Bill Causey Jr. as part of a concert on Monday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Galindo Rodriguez conducts the Jazz Orchestra.

Causey, who passed away in March, was a lifelong musician and fixture of the Shreveport music scene. He was a former band director at Captain Shreve High and owner of The Band House music store. A member of the Louisiana Jazz Hall of Fame, Causey was a supporter of the NSU Jazz Orchestra and music programs at Northwestern State.

Rodriguez along with fellow NSU music faculty Luke Brouillette, Dr. Masahito Kuroda and Dr. Malena McLaren will perform. The concert will include the premiere of “Quiet Remembrances (Remembering Bill Causey Jr.)” by Gary Halquist featuring Rodriguez. The Jazz Orchestra will also play arrangements by NSU students Andrew Boyd of Frisco, Texas, and Alex Guillory of Goldonna.

The program will include “Little Pixie” by Thad Jones featuring James Armstrong on piano and Andrew Boyd on vibraphone, “Scrapple from the Apple” by Charlie Parker and arranged by Alex Guillory featuring the saxophone section, “The Gentle Rain” by Luiz Bonfa and Matt Dubey featuring Michael Dailey on Trombone and “A Time for Love” by Johnny Mandel and P.F. Webster and arranged by Hank Levy featuring Kuroda and NSU euphonium students.

            The Jazz Orchestra will also play “A Night in Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie and F. Paparelli featuring Francisco B. Sayas on trumpet, Boyd’s arrangement of “Love Castle” by Chick Correa and featuring Boyd, “Solo Flight” by Charlie Christian, Benny Goodman and Jimmy Mundy and arranged by Jim Betts featuring Brouillette and McLaren, “In A Sentimental Mood” by Duke Ellington and Mike Tomaro featuring Laura Lovell on tenor saxophone and “Closely Dancing” by Arturo Sandoval and arranged by Ed Calle and featuring Lane Clevenger on trumpet.

            The program will also include “Moanin’” by Charles Mingus and arranged by Sy Johnson featuring Jack Dyre on baritone saxophone,  “My Funny Valentine” by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers and arranged by Mark Taylor with Kenyon Johnson on tenor saxophone, “Tank” from “Cowboy Bob” by Yoko Kanno and arranged by Eric Dannewitz featuring Alex Guillory on alto saxophone and Guillory’s arrangement of “Strasbourg St. Denis” by Roy Hargrove featuring Sebastian Fontalvo on trumpet and Guillory.
