NSU Choir Competition
May 18 @ 9:00 am - May 22 @ 6:00 pm
NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Chamber Choir along with members of the Lyrica Choir will compete internationally for the first time at the 3rd Budapest International Choral Celebration and Laurea Mundi International Open Competition and Grand Prix of Choral Music on May 18-22.
The Chamber Choir was selected by competition organizers based on a recording and letters of recommendation from national figures in choral music. Based on the audition recording, the choir bypassed the first round and qualified for the finals. The competition is open to any non-professional choir from around the world, regardless of their present artistic level of achievement and whether or not they have performed on the international stage.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for us to get a reputation outside the United States,” said Director of Choral Activities Dr. Nicholaus Cummins. “Our students will be able to hear ensembles from other countries and find new literature. It will be an eye-opening experience. We will get to perform in some incredible venues we would not have had access to otherwise.”
As part of the 12-day trip, the choir will have an exchange with the choir of the University of Krakow in Poland and perform with the Samford University A Cappella Choir at St. Mary’s Basilica in Krakow.
“Our music throughout the spring semester has been geared toward this,” said Cummins. “This has been both challenging and rewarding. I think this is an opportunity that can change the direction of Northwestern State’s choral program as our students learn what is out there in the world.”
Individual choir members are responsible for the costs of the trip. The choir received assistance from the university’s Organizational Relief Fund and individual donors.
