Wednesdays – Sundays • Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, Pineville – Touring the Forts, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Forts Randolph and Buhlow were the last forts that surrendered to the Union in the Civil War. A park staff member will give visitors a brief orientation about the configuration, topography and strategic placement of Fort Randolph on the Red River. Visitors will then be directed to the entrance to the fort where they will proceed with a self guided tour along the elevated boardwalk. As Requested • Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, Pineville – Guided Museum Tour, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Visitor Center at Fort Randolph has a number of interesting artifacts, as well as several educational elements. Exhibits are set up so that they can be appreciated and understood unguided, but a guide can often add interesting facts and antidotes to the visit. As Requested • Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, Pineville – Garden Tour, In partnership with the Rotary Club of Pineville, the site cultivates a Civil War-era vegetable garden. Some of the produce from the garden is used for period cooking demonstrations during the Campfire Cooking programs, while the remainder of the vegetables goes to the Main Street Mission in Pineville. Wednesdays – Sundays • Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, Pineville – Firing the Musket – A Tutorial, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Learn the steps a soldier had to take to properly train to use a weapon in the Civil War. As Requested • Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, Pineville – Feeding the Troops: Army Food During the Civil War, Wednesday-Sunday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Smell and taste the rations issued and cooked on both sides of the conflict. As there were two distinctive sides of the Civil War, the Northern version of the army mess was a bit different than the Southern side. Learn about both through cooking demonstrations. Once you´ve determined your ancestor was here, hear about the daily life of a soldier stationed here through diaries and letters of the soldiers stationed here. Learn about the history of the tea party and discuss “high” vs. “low” tea, then enjoy a historically-accurate tea party. This special program can be reserved for groups between 5 -25 attendees, for $10/person, and will last up to 2 hours. Guests are welcome to dress in period clothing. As Requested • Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, Pineville – The Turn of the Wheel – Spinning, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Learn about early spinning techniques, as site staff discuss and demonstrate the use of wool carders, a spinning wheel and spinning with a drop spindle, as well as discuss the use of different fibers in the creation of yarn. Fourth Saturday of the Month • Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, Pineville – Dutch Oven Cooking/Civil War Dulcimer Music, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The park will host the Central Louisiana Dutch Oven Cookers, for a cooking demonstration, with sampling to begin at 11:30 a.m. While participants learn about this increasingly-popular form of cooking, they can also enjoy live music by the Red River Dulcimer Ensemble from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call 877.677.7437 toll free or 318.484.2390 locally.

As Requested • Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site, Natchitoches – Escape from Fort St. Jean Baptiste, It is May 13, 1732…the Natchitoches colony and Fort are dealing with the aftermath of the Natchez attack; tension is high and conspiracy is all about. Participants are arrested and jailed in the fort under the accusation of conspiring with Fontaine to steal goods and money from the fort. Participants have to solve puzzles and complete tasks, in less than 45 minutes, to get past the guards and escape before St. Denis arrives for their trial.
