Local Botanical Artist

January 20 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Local Botanical Artist to Give Demonstration

Local botanical artist Carol Saunders will give a demonstration at Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, January 20 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The rose was Saunders’ first foray into painting watercolor on man-made vellum. The audience will participate as she guides them through her techniques while creating their own watercolor rose. Art supplies will be provided.

The event is held in conjunction with the current exhibit Botanical Art & Illustration from the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. The Institute meets the reference needs of botanists, biologists, historians, conservationists, librarians, bibliographers and the public at large. The exhibition includes a work by Saunders; “Rosehips”, pen-and-ink on drafting film, 2014.

After attending the Western Technical School in Toronto, Canadian-born Carol Saunders married a Pittsburgher and moved to the city in 1955. Here she studied drawing and calligraphy at Carnegie Mellon University and taught botanical art at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for 10 years. She now resides in Lake Charles.

Historic City Hall is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted. Charlestown Farmers’ Market is open on Bilbo Street behind the center every Saturday 8 a.m.-noon. For more information, please call 491-9147 or visit
