Light up the Lake Christmas Celebration
Lake Charles Community Band Christmas Concert at Trinity Baptist Church
The Lake Charles Community Band Christmas Concert will be held on Saturday, December 2 at 1:00 pm at Trinity Baptist Church of Lake Charles, 1800 Country Club Rd. This concert, held in conjunction with the Lake Charles Light up the Lake Celebration, is free to all ages. Band spokesperson, Brenda Harrington said, “This concert is traditionally held at the Civic Center so please take note of the temporary change of venue for this year.”
The program will feature the Our Lady Queen of Heaven School choir under the direction of Colette Bulber Tanner. The Trinity Baptist Visual and Musical Ministries will provide special seasonal effects for this concert.
The concert will begin with the setting of John Wasson’s powerful Festive Fanfare for Christmas. It opens up with a brilliant brass fanfare and then blossoms into a showcase for the entire ensemble incorporating the familiar carol “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Joy to the World”. Concert goers will delight in fun tunes such as “Grinch: A Christmas Choral Medley” and “Jingle Bells”. A Rhapsody on Christmas Carols presents a medley of eight popular sacred tunes highlighting the virtuosity of the band. There will be Broadway holiday favorites and much more.
The Community Band has a history which began over a century ago. Throughout the years, the size and instrumentation have varied. After several years of inactivity, the band was reorganized in 1978. Current conductor, Fredrick Roeder, was handed the baton in August 2016. Retired band director Leo Murray assists with conducting duties. The make-up of the band includes band directors, teachers, retirees, housewives, craftsmen, professionals, and students. The band is an all-volunteer group which is dedicated to sharing a love of music with the public.
The next scheduled concert will be held in March 2018. Check out Lake Charles Community Band on Facebook. For more information on Light up the Lake go to www.cityoflakecharles.com
