Concert of Pop and Latin American
November 9 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Gina Chavez to Perform Concert of Pop and Latin American Music on Friday, November 9th
Alexandria, LA – A multi-ethnic Latin pop songstress, Gina Chavez is a 10-time Austin Music Award winner. Her bilingual record, Up. Rooted, topped both the Amazon and Latin iTunes charts following a feature on NPR’s All Things Considered and has been hailed by The Boston Globe, USA Today, and Texas Monthly. Her Tiny Desk concert made NPR’s top 15 of 2015.
Chavez’s album, Up.Rooted, released fresh off a 10-country tour as a cultural ambassador with the U.S. State Department, is a passionate collection of bilingual songs that takes audiences on a journey through the Americas, blending the sounds and rhythms of the region with tension and grace. Her Spanish-language anthem, “Siete-D” (Grand Prize winner of the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest) recounts her experience volunteering in a gang-dominated suburb of San Salvador where she is a co-founder of The Niñas Arriba College Fund for young Latinas.
Chavez is releasing her new EP, Lightbeam, on September 15th. Chavez’s new EP is a “slow-burn soul and uptempo R&B” (NPR) love letter to her wife and long-time partner, Jodi. The two met at the University Catholic Center at the University of Texas at Austin where they quickly fell in love. The next 12 years would force the couple to balance their families’ Catholic beliefs with their own faith and love for each other. After navigating a long-distance relationship in the United States, hiding their love while volunteering with nuns in El Salvador and coming out to friends and family, the couple finally married in 2017, two years after marriage equality became legal in Texas.
It is a record that also tells a bigger story about how love can extend beyond the boundaries of gender, religion, race, and geography in an effort to lift people up and allow them to embrace themselves for who they are and live out loud.
Gina Chavez will perform at Coughlin-Saunders PAC on Friday, November 9th at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (65+) and $8 for students/children. Tickets are available online at Ticket-Central.org, by calling (318) 484-4474, or at the door.
