Deputies Apprehend Work Release Escapee

Michael-Thomas-Smith-mugUPDATE 4:08PM: The inmate that escaped and stole a vehicle earlier today at his job site has been apprehended by the Natchitoches Police Department.

Michael Thomas Smith was located after Natchitoches PD received information the escapee was at a local gas station in the stolen vehicle.  Patrol Officers responded and took Smith into custody without incident.  He will be booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center and will be transported back to Rapides Parish tomorrow.

Original Story: Rapides deputies say they’re looking for an escapee from a work release program site on Jackson Street.

20-year-old Michael Thomas Smith is not considered dangerous. He’s been convicted of forgery, motor vehicle theft and unauthorized use.

Deputies say he took a silver, 2009 Toyota Tacoma truck and left the work site about 11:15 this morning. If you know his whereabouts, call the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office at 318 473 6700.
