Each year the board invites law enforcement officials to describe how many tips they’ve received and how they’ve paid off with arrests and prosecutions. They had almost 200 tips last year, and that’s a record. The vast majority of those are tips about drug crimes.
The board singled out retiring District Attorney James Downs for honors. The group says Downs has been entirely supportive of crime stoppers, even providing them with free legal assistance when needed.
Downs, who has never faced opposition in an election during his tenure, has announced he will not run for re-election.
