Common Core Debate Likely Headed for Courtroom

BESEBoardAfter a day long, jam-packed special meeting in Baton Rouge, it appears the common core issue is headed to a courtroom, not a classroom.

The state education superintendent is pitted against the governor, who is trying by executive order to withdraw Louisiana from common core. The superintendent says the governor doesn’t have that power.

The board authorized legal action if an effort to negotiate the issue fails, and most were pessimistic about a meeting of the minds.

This has been a change for Governor Bobby Jindal who, at first, supported common core. Now he insists it’s federal government overreach.

Superintendent John White says the state is committed to the excellence in education common core will produce, and he’s largely supported by the business community.
