Light Up the Night 5K

Calling all runners (and those who can walk really fast)! The Rapides Cancer Center is sponsoring its second annual Light Up the Night 5K run on Friday, March 21, 2014, to benefit the American Cancer Society and draw awareness to the ACS’s annual Relay For Life.

The route is through downtown Alexandria and is flat and fast.

“Bye Bye Birdie”

Come out and watch as the Macafee family and the residents of Sweet Apple, Ohio, go topsy-turvy when teen idol Conrad Birdie comes to town to serenade one lucky fan before he enters the Army. You’ll be humming and bopping to the music in this smash Broadway hit!

“Crowns”

By popular demand, City Park Players offers a reprise of this stand-up-and-testify musical based on a book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry. Yolanda, a Brooklyn girl, goes down South to visit her grandmother and learns about rituals of preparing for and going to Sunday church service. In the process, she discovers connections to traditions and a deeper spirituality. Crowns is a soul-stirring tribute to the unique cultural phenomenon that fuses faith with fashion by celebrating African-American women and their church hats.

Gardening Symposium

For the first time ever Kent House is hosting a free gardening symposium on the grounds. All day there will be various speakers scheduled to give talks on topics such as tree care, vegetable gardening, rose care, edible plants, and many other topics. Stay tuned as the schedule will be posted as soon as we have it available! Various gardening groups and organizations will be set up to give information on their clubs for anyone interested in joining . This fun and informative event will have something for everyone!

Plein Air Painting

Learn how to paint landscapes en plein air (“in the open air”) at this outdoor workshop on the LSUA campus, taught by local artist Margie Tate. Participants should bring their own painting surface and materials. For a list of materials and to register, please contact the Museum at (318) 443-3458.

City Wide Celebration

The “City Wide Celebration” will honor new businesses and familiar faces in the Downtown District. It’s also a benefit for the “Taking it to the Street” organization. It’s a volunteer group that hosts free monthly walking tours with live street performers on the second Saturday of each month in Downtown Alexandria. The event will include music by the band “The Side Men” to dance the night away.

“Ride to the Son” Motorcycle Rally

Tour for Hope Central Louisiana Tour of Homes

Join the Hope House of Central Louisiana for their 2nd Annual Tour for Hope Central Louisiana Tour of Homes. This self-guided tour of homes will take place on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 2-4 PM, and will feature the homes of Mona and Jim Gates, Rep. and Mrs. Lance Harris, and Babson and Tish Fresh. You can register for a door prize at all three homes, and all proceeds will benefit the Hope House of Central Louisiana.
