Colfax Man Arrested for Beating Up His Mother


Grant Deputies say they’ve arrested a Colfax man for beating up his mother.  William Sibley reportedly punched his mother in the face and then threw her to the floor and stomped on her chest.  Deputies say he had to be tased before they could take him into custody.

VOA Receives Large Check from Wal-Mart


It’s a little like Christmas in July for Volunteers of America. Wal-Mart presented a 50-thousand dollar check to VOA for a program called “BEST”.  That stands for “Building Empowerment through Skills and Training.”  The program gives more than a hundred women skills to make it on their own.

Earl Barbry Sr. Dies at 62


The man credited with leading the Tunica Biloxi Indian Tribe from poverty to prosperity has died after a long illness.
62-year-old Earl Barbry Senior of Marksville was the chairman of the tribe when it finally received federal recognition in September 1981.  He was the longest serving leader of any federally recognized tribe in the United States.

Escaped Inmate Captured


Vernon Deputies capture an inmate they say had been missing for 2 weeks.  He’s 23-year-old Tobias Williams, who had been a work-release prisoner.
Deputies say he left a Leesville job site, and he was arrested this afternoon.

New Business Admin. Dept. Interim Chair at LSUA


The new interim chair for the Business Administration Department at LSU Alexandria is Doctor Haywood Joiner.  He currently serves as chair of the allied health department.  Joiner succeeds Doctor Robert Bush, who will continue in his endowed chair in business.

LA State Police Launch “See Something – Send Something”

Louisiana State Police has a new service with a new slogan: “See Something – Send Something.”  Both are expected to connect people and their smart phones to criminal intelligence centers nationwide.

Troopers say this could especially be helpful in rural areas.

Elmer Woman Accused of Sex Crimes


A 31-year-old Elmer woman is accused of various sex crimes.  Rapides Deputies say Dorothy Jean Vanasselberg is charged with child pornography, indecent behavior and sexual battery.
Deputies say they acted on a complaint involving a child and say detectives saw a video of the woman.  She’s still in jail under a 200 thousand-dollar bond.
