Monroe Mayor Announces Run for Congress

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo today appears in Alexandria to announce his candidacy for the 5th district congressional seat.
So far, he’s the only democrat in a crowded field and this will be his second time to run for the seat.

Mayo has been mayor for the past 13 years.

Kennedy: Federal Law Will Force Taxpayers to Pay for Sex Change Operations

State Treasurer John Kennedy is complaining about a federal law he says will force taxpayers to pay for sex change operations. Kennedy says these added costs point out why Louisiana should fix its Medicaid program before it goes into bankruptcy.

He says both Medicare and Medicaid are approaching insolvency.

Man Arrested for Firearm Theft, Drug Offenses

An Alexandria man is in jail under a half million-dollar bond for 3 firearm offenses and drug charges. Marlon Chaney was arrested yesterday for a theft that happened in Boyce on June 29th.
The homeowner had been on vacation and when they returned, discovered a firearm and other items were missing.

Overturned Kayak in Red River Causes Scare

Fire rescue officials gathered on the Red River this morning near the Purple Heart Bridge looking for a possible missing kayaker. It turned out there was no emergency.
It started when a passerby saw an overturned kayak in the Red River. That drew officials from Pineville, Alexandria and the Rapides Sheriff’s Office.

Alexandria police arrest two brothers for the hold-up of a man at gunpoint yesterday in the 500 block of Richmond Avenue. Jimique Tison and Eric Tison II are both from Alexandria.
Nobody was hurt, but police say the two took electronic items and ran off.
