State Treasurer Kennedy Teaches Students about His Job


Some students at Julius Patrick Elementary have a new teacher, at least for part of today.
He’s State Treasurer John Kennedy, who is teaching these kids about the state’s piggy bank, which he oversees.  Kennedy gave these students an overview of his job and how it affects the lives of their families.

Tioga Teen Dies in Accidental Shooting


Rapides Deputies say a Tioga teen died yesterday afternoon after an accidental shooting.
Sheriff William Earl Hilton says 17-year-old Tony Lawson and his friends were handling a gun they thought was empty, but it discharged.  A bullet hit the victim once and killed him.

Alexandria police say a woman is in stable condition after a shooting yesterday in the 100 block of Kent Street.

Tourism Celebration Today Features Attractions in CenLA


It’s a Celebration of Tourism at the Interstate 49 Welcome Center today.
This annual event features displays, food and music.  The local convention and visitors bureau is trying to make locals and visitors aware of the many attractions in and around Central Louisiana.  They’re also touting the Little Walter birthday party.

Elections Saturday in 35 Parishes

Polls are open from 7 in the morning to 8 pm tomorrow night in 35 parishes for elections.
In Rapides parish, voters will decide on a property tax renewal for Renaissance Home and in Alexandria, a proposed recreation and zoo property tax is on the ballot.

Citizens Around Cenla Participate in Nat’l Day of Prayer


It’s a National Day of Prayer and several groups planned observances around the noon hour.
We caught up with these residents in Pineville.  They observed the day with a brief prayer service on the steps of Pineville City Hall.
Other observances included the mall and some churches.

LA Students Compete in Auto Tech Competition


20 juniors and seniors from 10 high schools across the state competed this morning.
They’re repairing cars, but it’s not as simple as it sounds.  These cars have been purposely bugged to test the auto tech skills of these budding mechanics.  Each 2-student team will race the clock to identify and fix the problems.

Pineville Woman Arrested for Burglary


A Pineville woman is arrested for burglary and theft of 10 thousand dollars worth of jewelry.
Amy Carriker Stanley Chambers is accused in the April 15th break-in of a home.  Police say she sold the jewelry to a pawnshop for just 600 dollars.

Local NAACP Speaks About Recreation Tax

Members of the local NAACP chapter say they want to clarify their position on a proposed recreation and zoo tax for the city of Alexandria.

Gary Hays Running for Pineville Judgeship


The Pineville city prosecutor announces his candidacy for the judgeship there.
Gary Hays has been a practicing lawyer for more than 20 years and has been city prosecutor since 1998.  He’s also a magistrate for the Town of Ball.
