Update – Authorities say James Gilbert was wearing body armor and used a long gun to take money from an armored car in front of Wal-Mart on Coliseum Boulevard yesterday in Alexandria.
He was captured after fleeing the scene and crashed into another vehicle. His booking photo, pictured here, was released today; showing injuries from this wreck.
Louisiana College officials say James Gilbert taught at the school as a psychology professor until April of 2011. On his professional resume, he identifies himself as a private practice therapist, specializing in marriage and family therapy.
So far, Gilbert’s bond is set at ,000, but he remains in jail because no bond has been set on the most serious charge of attempted murder.
His charges so far include armed robbery, unlawful use of body armor, attempted murder, reckless operation, and running a red light. Jail records indicate he was booked last night around 7:00. Authorities say Gilbert has a long list of degrees. Most of his degrees are from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Press Release – The Alexandria Police is currently investigating the robbery of an armored vehicle that took place at Wal-Mart located at 6225 Coliseum Boulevard.
At 10:24 AM Wednesday morning, APD received a call of a reported robbery of an armored car with shots fired at the Coliseum Blvd. Wal-Mart. APD Patrol, SRT, Investigators and Crime Scene personnel responded immediately.
At this time the investigation reveals that at around 10:20, the suspect perpetrated an armed robbery of the armed security guard of a financial transport vehicle. During the robbery the suspect fired multiple shots. Nobody was injured by gunfire and at this time there appears to be no property damage associated with the gunfire. After completing the robbery, the suspect fled with an undetermined amount of U.S. Currency. A retired LSP Trooper observed the suspect acting suspicious and followed the suspect out of the parking lot as he fled. As the suspect fled the scene he was involved in a traffic collision at the intersection of Coliseum and Cloverleaf. The retired trooper, an additional off-duty LSP Trooper, a nearby citizen and an Alexandria Police Officer subdued and disarmed the suspect.
The suspect was identified as James P. Gilbert, 57 of Deville, LA, sustained minor injuries during the crash and is currently receiving treatment while in custody.
The occupants of the second vehicle involved in the crash were transported to a local hospital where it is reported that they received treatment for their non-life threatening injuries.
Gilbert was armed with several weapons and was equipped with body armor. APD Detectives, along with LSP Investigators are currently executing search warrants to further develop the evidence. Gilbert will be charged once released form medical treatment and the investigators process the evidence being gathered.
