Alex River Fete May 8th-10th

AlexRiverFeteThe second annual Alex River Fete will be held May 8 through May 10 on the banks of the Red River in Downtown Alexandria.

Participants can look forward to a weekend of food, fun, Dragon Boat Races, Classic Car Fete, Kids Fete, more food, live music, a barbecue cookoff, Art Walk, Dinner on the Bricks, and still more live music.

Dinner on the Bricks kicks off the weekend festival at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8 on Third Street in front of City Hall in Downtown Alexandria. The event is sponsored by the City of Alexandria Division of Community Services and features dinner and drinks outdoors hosted by numerous Central Louisiana restaurants and caterers. Music will be provided by the Gary Cathey Band. No reservations are required. Admission is free. Menu prices vary.

On Friday, Dragon Boat racers will be practicing on the Red River, and the Art Walk will begin at 5 p.m. on the streets of downtown. Fete ’14 continues to ramp up at 9 p.m. with live music, food, a beer garden and more street events.

Saturday begins early at 7 a.m. as the local barbecue competition and the 4th annual Louisiana Dragon Boat Races get underway. The Dragon Boat Races have become a popular event drawing thousands of spectators to the banks of the Red River to cheer their favorite team of rowers and raise money for the Alexandria Museum of Art.

The ArtWalk featuring crafts, art and other items for sale continues at 9 a.m. A Kids Fete area with activities especially for children will be located on Johnston Street between the Hotel Bentley and City Hall. And Classic Cars will be on display across from the Hotel Bentley in the parking lot at Jackson and Second streets.

Live music continues throughout the day on two stages.
