Adopt-A-Block Program to Hold Second Annual Backpack Giveaway August 2

NATCHITOCHES – Faith Family Church’s Adopt-A-Block Program will hold its Second Annual Backpack Giveaway on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the MLK Recreation and Community Center in Natchitoches for students in need. Backpacks will include school supplies such as crayons, rulers, scissors, notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, pens, binders, tissue, pencil pouches and folders.

The Backpack Giveaway will take place on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the MLK Recreation and Community Center located at 660 MLK Drive. “Last year we gave away 250 backpacks. We are hoping to reach double the amount of kids,” stated Adopt-a-Block Director Meghan Sylvia.

In preparation of the giveaway, a school supply drive will be held at the Cane River Green Market on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase school supplies for the Backpack Giveaway.

The Adopt-A-Block program is an outreach program of Faith Family Church that attempts to bring basic needs to underserved areas and build relationships in the community. “By asking the simple question of how we can be of service, we make ourselves available to meet people’s needs where they are,” said Sylvia.

The Adopt-A-Block program has worked with residents of J.W. Thomas Apartments and the Jackson Square Community. Volunteers of the Saturday morning outreach program go out into the community providing services such as cleaning houses, passing out basic household needs, playing with children, and serving as mentors.
