St. Landry Parish District 3 firefighters were dispatched to 906 Montgomery Road in Opelousas just before 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, where they found a single-story, wood-framed house fully engulfed in flames.

After firefighters made entry into the burning remnants of the home, the lifeless body of Mary Ann Sam, 73, was located in the northeast corner of the structure. Sam’s body was processed on the scene by investigators and subsequently released to the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy has been requested by the State Fire Marshal’s Office in order to determine the cause of death.

While preliminary findings indicate that the fire originated on the west end of the residence, investigators continue to process the scene in order to establish the cause of this tragic fire.

At the time of the fire Sam was the sole occupant of the home.
